A Drop of Clear Water: A 10-Minute Guided Energy Refresh Meditation

A gentle Guanyin-inspired meditation for releasing energetic heaviness, settling your system, and returning to a sense of clarity and renewal.

Years ago, when everything in my life felt grey and heavy, I had a healing session with Sandra Sweetman. I had burned out—utterly—after years in academia. My mind, once sharp and eager, felt sluggish. My body ached in ways I couldn’t quite name. Sandra had lived in Hong Kong for much of her life and often returned there. She shared a practice with me that she had learned through her own experiences and teachers.

Sandra led me through the Guanyin Energy Refresh Meditation. As she guided me, I imagined a lotus blooming at the crown of my head, filled with the clearest water. I let Guanyin—the goddess of compassion, or whatever her name was, as I had never heard of her before—drop a single, pure drop into that flower. And then, for the first time in as long as I could remember, I felt something shift. The exhaustion, the emotional weight, the tension I had been carrying—it began to loosen. That meditation, that moment, was the first time I felt truly refreshed in years.

You can return to this meditation whenever you feel heavy, scattered, depleted, or simply too full of everything you’ve been carrying. You don’t have to wait until you’re completely exhausted. Sometimes ten quiet minutes is enough to notice what you’ve accumulated—and let some of it go.

How I learned this practice

When Sandra first taught me this meditation, I had no idea that I would eventually become a healer myself, or that she would become my most important mentor.

I only knew that something had shifted. She had given me a way to return to myself: to release what felt stagnant and receive something clear in its place.

Years later, I understood that the practice was only one part of what Sandra had given me.

A Lineage of Care

Sandra had already been my mentor for years when my husband became ill. After he died, I realized that one of the reasons she was meant to be in my life was to support me through that loss, drawing on her own experience as a young widow.

My prayer during that time was simple: that I receive the assistance I need, when I need it.

And I did.

Again and again, the right person appeared. Sometimes with practical help. Sometimes with experience I didn't yet have. Sometimes simply as evidence that there was life on the other side of what I was living through.

I've come to understand this as a kind of lineage of care: what one person has lived through and learned becomes something she can offer another. Sandra received this practice and eventually offered it to me. I received it when I desperately needed it, and now I can offer it to you.

Perhaps that is another kind of clear water.

Something received. Something passed on. Something that can keep moving.
